The tachometer, Odometer, and Speedometer are the main tools present in the instrument cluster panel in the vehicle dashboard. The tachometer shows us the RPM of the engine. The odometer is a reading show unit that says how much distance the vehicle has traveled till now. And Speedometer indicates the speed of the running vehicle.
These are the main instrument cluster devices. Apart From this there any many others like, fuel gauge, engine temperature, and all signal lights, and indications that are present in the dashboard of the vehicle. What is Tachometer?

A Tachometer is also known as an RPM(Rotation Per Minute) gauge. It is a device that shows the speed of the rotating engine shaft. They are two types, one is fully digital which uses an increasing number to display RPM. And another is calibrated analog dial which contains a stick it increases and decreased as per the engine's rpm.

How tachometer works?

The working Principe of the tachometer is very simple to understand. It uses sensors that are placed near the engine shaft or flywheel. The sensors sense the data and send the data to ECU(engine control unit) in the form of electrical voltage. ECU uses the data to operate the engine as well as share the details on the instrumental cluster panel. The CKP sensors used here can be hall type, IC type, or missing teeth type.

Do you need Tachometer in an AMT vehicle?
In an automatic transmission car, you do not need a tachometer. You can drive the car at your convenience by reading a tachometer reading. Because everything is automatic and you don't need to shift by yourself. Your car's ECU does it internally and you are able to drive a car without any difficulty with gear changing.
During the idle running condition, the tachometer reading should be around 800 to 1000 RPM.

What is Odometer?

An odometer is an instrument for measuring the distance traveled by the vehicle. It can be short or long-term distance. The unit of the reading is KM( kilometer) in India and for countries like the USA, it is in miles. It is also of two types analog and digital. Modern cars are equipped with digital odometers which can't be reset. It is fixed reading and shows the total no of distance traveled by the vehicle from the date of manufacturing.
In the case of an analog mechanical Odometer, it can be reset by the resetter button on the panel. Usually, drivers use it to calculate the trip distance. The odometer is a very help full tool to measure distance and calculate mileage.
An odometer is the most important tool for any vehicle. Using this reading, vehicle inspectors calculate the resale or current values of the car. This indicator also says a lot about the health condition of cars. If the reading is too high. Then it means the vehicle has traveled a lot, and if the value is low, then it means the vehicle has traveled less. Generally, 2nd hand buyers look for cars with fewer odometer readings.

Can you change the odometer reading of the car?
Yes, it can be changed using the OBD tools. But, it's not an easy task. You must consult with an expert-level technician before doing so. In some cars, a button is also given to reset the odometer.

Is it legal to change the odometer?
As per the government guidelines, a person should not try to “disconnect, reset, alter, or have disconnected, reset, or altered, an odometer reading of any motor vehicle intending to change the mileage registered by the odometer.

What is a speedometer?

A speedometer is a speed meter gauge fitted in the instrument cluster panel of cars or vehicles. It shows at what speed the vehicle is running. It shows speed count with help of a traditional analog dial. 
In digital Cluster panels, there are increasing numbers that denote the current speed of the vehicle. The data is taken from the ECU. And ECU gets the data from the sensors.
The unit of the speedometer is Km/hour in India and miles/hour in the USA.
The analog dial keeps changing as you accelerate or apply the brake. Speedometer provides the 99.99% accurate data.

Instrument Cluster Panel

An instrument cluster panel is a device that shows the reading of the tachometer odometer, speedometer, fuel efficiency, engine temperature, indicators, fault indication light, tire pressure, and many more data. When the driver turn on the ignition key the cluster panel woke up and started showing data and all lights started glowing. And when the car starts all the lights disappear. 
There are three types of instrument panels:
  • Analog insturmemt Cluster
  • Semi-Digital Instrument Cluster
  • Full Digital Display Cluster Panel
The data shown on the panel depends on the type of vehicle you have. If you are having a high-end modern car, then you may get access to lots of data with a digital display. It looks great. In the case of an average vehicle, there is most probably get an Analog panel traditional system. It contains 2 big round gauges, one for the tachometer and one for the speedometer, and an odometer reading in between them. And mini lights and other indications are also visible on the instrumental cluster of the vehicle. It can be an analog or full digital display showing all technical specifications. 
This panel is provided in both 2-wheelers and 4-wheelers. And data shown depends on different, loads, roads, and weather conditions. For bikes, it shows less information and for cars, it shows lots of data as the car has lots of sensors.  Using of the sensors this panel shows the entire health condition of the vehicle. 
This panel is electrical and gets power with the help of batteries.


Can we change the data in the instrument cluster panel of the car?
Yes, it is possible to change with the help of a few advanced tools. However, it's not an easy task to do. But, You need to be an expert-level of technician to perform this activity.

Drivers while driving the car must need to know the following things, speed of the vehicle, engine speed, and distance traveled so far. An instrument cluster panel is the only method to showcase these data. They are shown with the help of devices like a tachometer, odometer, and speedometer.
