CRDI - Common Rail Direct Injection (Hyundai)
CRDI means a common rail direct injection system. It is a type of fuel delivery system used in most cars and vehicles. In this system, fuel is taken out and delivered into the engine's combustion chamber. CRDI is the name used by Hyundai and other brands that call the same system different names. Like, DICOR, CRDE, and DDIS, the three are the same but are used by various companies like TATA, Mahindra, and Maruti.
What is CRDI?
CRDI is the most advanced form of fuel delivery system which is fully automatic and controlled by ECU. And here, ECU works on the data provided by the actuators and sensors. This system is mostly used by Hyundai( a motor company).
Is CRDI and MPFI the same?
No, both are different. CRDI is used in diesel engines whereas MPFI is used in petrol engines.
Parts/components used in the CRDI system
The main working components of the CRDI are:
- Fuel tank
- Fuel filter
- Pump
- Pressure Regulating Valve
- High-pressure Pump
- A common rail
- Injectors
- ECU
- And Few sensors and Actuators.
Working of CRDI | How this system works?
The whole setup is operated electronically and automatically with the help of some sensors and actuators. It all starts from APS (acceleration pedal position sensor)
ECU Which is the electronic control unit of the engine finds the position of the acceleration pedal and allows the injectors to open for a particular time so the only required fuel can be delivered inside the cylinder.
The fuel travels from the tank via strainer, filter, pump, PRV value, high-pressure pump, common rail, and the injector to the cylinder.
As seen in the image It contains a common rail that is connected with different injectors. The high-pressure pump creates high pressure in the common rail which ranges from 1600-2200 bar. This high pressure helps the injectors to inject the fuel easily. And injectors are solenoid based which is opened and closed by the ECU. ECU calculates the duration of injection and opens the injectors only for the required time so that the only desired amount of fuel can be delivered inside the cylinder.

Advantages Of CRDI (Common Rail Direct Injection)
Here are some main advantages of CRDI.
- Pre-Main and Post-injection timing.
- Better utilization of fuel.
- A high-pressure injection is achieved.
- Better mileage and Pickup of vehicle.
- CRDI also Lowers the pollution level of the vehicle.
Disadvantages of CRDI system
- Higher manufacturing and maintenance costs.
