Does EGR system Decreases Engine Power? (Must Know)

Does EGR system Decrease Engine Power?

You will be shocked to know that the EGR system in automobiles decreases the volumetric efficiency as well as power output.
Yes, you heard it right. Then, you must be thinking. why are we using EGR? What it actually does? Does it do any other thing to the engine? All these doubts and topics are covered in this article. Let's get started.
EGR system in automobile

Little Intro to EGR

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation System. It is part of em mission control system in an automobile vehicle. It has zero roles in increasing engine power. It is used in vehicles to stop the formation of NOx gas. Which are very harmful to nature.
Generally, when a vehicle runs on the road it produces lots of smoke and pollutants like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and the most dangerous one i.e. oxides of nitrogen.

Formation of NOx Fas Inside Engines Cylinder

It is essential to know how and when NOx is formed inside an engine's combustion chamber. Nitrogen and oxygen are already present in the air. In order to form NOx gas, only three things are needed. Oxygen, Nitrogen, and high temperature of around 1050 degree centigrade
When the engine is running at high rpm and the working temperature inside the cylinder reaches around 1050 °c, the formation of NOx starts.
In my last article EGR, I mentioned the complete process of EGR in detail check it out.

How EGR affects Engine Power?

Now coming on to the main topic of the article how does it affect the engine power. It has many disadvantages like decreased volumetric efficiency as well as the user having to make a compromise between the engine power and pollution.
When the little part of exhaust gas (6 to 10%) is recirculated and sent into the intake manifold. It diluted the fresh air in the intake manifold. It reduces the O2 in the fresh air. And the exhaust gas also acts as a heat absorbent. Due to this reason, the temperature of the engine couldn't rise more than 1050. And the formation of NOx was reduced.
But on the other hand, the power was decreased because of diluted mixture with less quantity of oxygen was entering the combustion chamber. Proper combustion was not able to happen on the head of the pistons. Due to this a loss of power can be noticed.

Additional Systems Used With EGR

Till now you are aware of the pros and cons of using the EGR system in automobiles. Now is the time for an upgrade. EGR was very laggy and was not able to reduce the NOx ultimately. So, engineers have come up with a solution and added a new system with it is known as SCR (selective catalytic reduction).
SCR is an entirely chemical reaction process that happens inside a separate chamber which was reduce the NOx by a chemical reaction in the presence of a few catalysts.
After this one more upgrade can be found in the BS6 vehicles. i.e lean NOx trap and DPF filter. All these systems help to reduce NOx and some particular matters.

Overall Conclusion

This article was all about how NOx is controlled in an automobile vehicle. We all know NOx is a very harmful gas and it is necessary to control it. So, all these systems like EGR, SCR, and Lean NOx trap help to prevent the oxides of nitrogen NOx. After applying all these methods, finally, the vehicle can be used to its full potential without any power loss. And the formation of NOx is almost zero.

Tachometer Odometer Speedometer | Instrument Cluster Tools Explained

Tachometer Odometer Speedometer | Instrument Cluster Tools Explained The tachometer , Odometer , and Speedometer are the main tools present in the instrument cluster panel in the vehicle dashboard. The tachometer shows us the RPM of the engine. The odometer is a reading show unit that says how much distance the vehicle has traveled till now. And Speedometer indicates the speed of the running vehicle. These are the main instrument cluster devices. Apart From this there any many others like, fuel gauge , engine temperature, and all signal lights, and indications that are present in the dashboard of the vehicle. In this article, I have covered everything detailed about essential devices like tachometer odometer, and speedometers. See the below image to get an idea of what an instrumental cluster panel looks like.  What is Tachometer? A Tachometer is also known as an  RPM (Rotation Per Minute) gauge. It is a device that shows the speed of the rotating engine shaft. They ...

What Is Fuel Feed System In Automobile?

Fuel Feed System In Automobile Welcome to another interesting article on Autoblogly. I have shared the entire details, parts, and types of the  fuel feed system  in automobiles. In each and every moving vehicle, the fuel is stored in the tank, and in order to start and run the vehicle, the fuel stored in the tank must reach the engine's combustion chamber. This system is available on SI as well as Compression Ignition Engines. Fuel Feed System - Automobile  The process of delivering fuel from the tank to the combustion chamber is known as the fuel feed system. In a fuel feed system, the fuel can be delivered in many ways. It means there are different methods of delivering the fuel from the tank to the engine. I have covered a little about all of them. But the most important and advanced one is CRDI. This one is currently used at present and this system can be found in each and every new vehicle. So, before going further. I want to start from the beginning so that it will...

CRDI (Explained In Very Simple Words)

CRDI - Common Rail Direct Injection (Hyundai) CRDI means a common rail direct injection system. It is a type of fuel delivery system used in most cars and vehicles. In this system, fuel is taken out and delivered into the engine's combustion chamber. CRDI is the name used by Hyundai and other brands that call the same system different names. Like, DICOR , CRDE, and DDIS , the three are the same but are used by various companies like TATA , Mahindra , and Maruti . What is CRDI? CRDI is the most advanced form of fuel delivery system which is fully automatic and controlled by ECU . And here, ECU works on the data provided by the actuators and sensors. This system is mostly used by Hyundai( a motor company).  Is CRDI and MPFI the same? No, both are different. CRDI is used in diesel engines whereas MPFI is used in petrol engines. Parts/components used in the CRDI system The main working components of the CRDI are: Fuel tank Fuel filter Pump Pressure Regulating Valve High-pressure Pu...
